Wind power when not connected to the Grid
A similar system is used as for grid-connect with an inverter producing the 230V ac but now free running without the need for grid power being present. It will shut down if the battery voltage falls to a lower limit to protect the batteries from excessive discharge. The controller ensures that the batteries are not overcharged which can shorten their life. In this particular case when the batteries are fully charged power from the wind turbine is diverted to resistive load, a heater. Some systems will stall the wind turbine, rather than diverting power, to protect the batteries. The Proven range of wind turbines are well suited to this application. Size of wind turbineIn this case the electrical output of the wind turbine is stored in a battery bank to provide energy and power on demand.. The size of the battery bank will depend in part on the peak power required and also the degree of dependence on the wind energy source. It would be unwise to rely solely on wind power since calm periods would require excessively large battery banks, In the case of power requirements such as an average household the battery bank requirements become very large and it is often a better approach to use a wind generator to supplement the output of a diesel generator. Considerable cost savings can be made by avoiding using the diesel generator for low power loads or very short times. Such combination systems can be fully automatic. Essential requirements
