Solar (PV) photovoltaic panels not connected to grid

Small PV arrays are excellent for low power remote applications. They are used extensively for powering weather monitorinr stations and road signs. They can be used in much the same way as wind energy off grid systems. In general, it is not practical to use PV arrays as the sole source of power to a household but, as with wind energy, they can be used to supplemental a diesel/petrol generator.
