At present planning permission is required in the UK for the permanent erection of a wind turbine irrespective of the size. The Governments attitude toward small scale renewable energy is very positive. Planning Policy Statement 22 on Renewable Energy seeks to encourage developments even in AONBs:

"Small-scale developments should be permitted within areas such as National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Heritage Coasts provided that there is no significant
environmental detriment to the area concerned."
